Terrazza Cafe & Restaurant (Perth)

Published August 12, 2010 by Mary Jane

Evening bloggy friends, I had another productive day – I hope I’m able to keep this up. As some of you may know I’m sort of a Go Go person, so the thought of staying at home and not doing much would just drive me insane!! So I must occupy myself with things to do and keep myself busy. Anyways, this particular restaurant is one of my all time favourite in Perth. I always choose this restaurant as it’s convenient, close to my home and they always make really nice food and generally service is pretty great too 🙂

So for our farewell with my mates, the girls decided to book at Terrazza Cafe & Restaurant. We arrived there and saw the place was getting pretty packed and we asked the manager whether we could have a table of 4 and he hesitated and said “Sure, we’ll see what we can do” and within minutes he showed us to our table. Michelle was feeling rather hungry so we decided to order some garlic bread for entree..

Audrey always goes for her usual pasta – which is PENNE ALLA VODKA – Chilli Tiger Prawns flamed in Vodka with Sundried Tomato and Asparagus in Napolitana Sauce with a dash of Cream. Vickie also went for her usual pasta – LINGUINE – Bacon, Prawns, Onion, Mushroom and Pepper tossed in extra Virgin Olive Oil with a hint of Garlic and Chilli. Michelle went for the FETTUCCINE DELICATE – Ribbon Pasta, Prawns, Scallops and Snow Peas in a White Wine Cream Sauce and for me my usual choice of the dish is either a surf or turf of beef with some prawns and scallops, Terrazza catch – with is fish of the day but on that night I felt adventurous it’s about time to choose a new dish. So I spotted the LASAGNA RUSTICA – Southern style Lasagna layered with Egg and Ham served with Garden Salad. Now, I’ve never had Lasagna with egg and ham in them, so I asked the waiter “would you recommend me having the beef or lasagna and he replied without a doubt – Lasagna, our lasagna is very different you should try it” So it was enough to convince me 🙂

Terrazza’s dishes are always well presented and flavorsome, everyone were very happy with their pasta dishes and finally when my lasagna arrived, I was so excited to taste this dish and to my amaze, it’s very tasty – the eggs which I imagined which was going to be fried eggs it turned out to be boiled eggs and it goes really well with the ham and cheese, very tasty – I’m so glad I went for the lasagna and you feel healthy as it was served with green salads 🙂

Overall, our food waiting time was quite good considered it was a busy night and the waitress/waiters were very friendly. Here’s my rating:

Restaurant Review – Andrews Coffee shop (New York)

Published May 26, 2010 by Mary Jane

Evening bloggy friends, hope this post finds you all well. What can I say?? Time is really going so quick the other way I was thinking well there’s still around 6 months till I move..but now I’ve got around 9 weeks till I move to Melbourne – argh!!!! I’m just trying to my contain myself and not get carried away. Thankfully, with juggling between Church activities and meeting up with friends & family have made me forget about my move. Not sure whether that’s a good sign or not. Anyways, this Saturday I’m meeting my girl friends for a baking session and I’m still wondering what we should bake???

Okies, so I’ve moved on from San Francisco to New York – a fantastic city which never sleeps. I love New York totally opposite to what I think it was going to be – the hustle & bustle of busy city lifestyle seems have faded away by it’s full on neon lights, friendly Americans, food was divine and theater – it was just an amazing experience. I shall write a post on New York activities…but for now, here’s a restaurant review on this lovely casual brekkie restaurant which was recommended by our hotel concierge. It was walking distance from our hotel and we were starving when we arrived early in the morning and had to wait till arvo to check into our hotel. What’s best then to dine at a place for yummy brekkie??

So we arrived at Andrews coffee shop – it was packed with people, straight away we were greeted with a waitress who sat us down with some menu. The place reminds me of a show on TV either from NCIS or Law and Order place where the cops will be at this casual restaurant having brekkie & coffee. There’s the colourful walls, TVs and you could see through the kitchen area.

We were staring through the menu, there were lots of varieties – so hard to choose from an extensive menu. Pandabear ended up ordering sausage & eggs with hash brown. Now as I’ve mentioned before, hash brown = mashed potatoes pan fried…and my choice was a greedy choice of the works – which had the eggs, bacon, sausages, & pancakes…that’s right..I had savoury & sweet I was starving and would love to try a bit of everything!!! We waited for our food which seemed to be taking for a long time. We waited and every time the waitress walked closer to our table she ended up rocking to another table to serve it’s as if she was avoiding us hehehehe….then finally she came, she was looking pretty exhausted – I don’t blame her, it was a packed restaurant and to be working at brekkie time – waking up early in the morning to serve these hungry mob brekkie is definitely not an easy task.

I had to wait for mine to arrive for quite sometime, I was starting to regret perhaps of being too greedy in ordering too much stuff. So I started picking food off Pandabear’s plate cos I was hungry!! Eventually my brekkie arrived. I was really surprised, the reason was because I was expecting them to separate my savoury brekkie from my sweet pancakes – but instead I get my eggs piling on top of my pancakes and mixed with sausages & bacon. But that’s ok, cos I ate all my savoury part first and then put some blue berry jam onto my pancakes and finished that off. The brekkie was delicious, both Pandabear and I were pretty happy with our brekkie – tummy satisfied. I must admit the sausages were quite different – I’ve never tasted this kind of sausage before – it’s kinda minced meat.

So overall, we were happy with our food – just the service & food waiting time was a let down but then again you kinda expect it from a casual dining restaurant. We left the restaurant with some tips on the table and walked off feeling full & happy.

Restaurant Review – Burger Bar (San Francisco)

Published May 3, 2010 by Mary Jane

Now, I’m nearly towards the end part of San Francisco – it’s a place with great people and great food. So, we’ve heard people raving about the burgers in US saying how they are delicious and super size. So we found out this restaurant in Macy’s department store called Burger Bar who is renowned for serving awesome burgers. I believe this place is owned by Hubert Keller, the menu has some info of this chef and he seemed pretty cool and I’ve watched a few episodes of his cooking and it seems pretty impressive. So we caught a lift up to about level 8 to the burger bar and when we arrived the restaurant had pretty casual decor, a bar and some tables – now how the restaurant stands out is the view you get from sitting by the window side you can view the whole area of Union square.

The waitress was nice and friendly sat us a table near the window side which had a great view. We went through the menus, it was hard deciding which burgers to pick there were so many varieties…anyways Pandabear decided to go with the fancy burger. A surf & turf burger, black angus, grilled half lobster, grilled green asparagus on a plain bun served with skinny fries – sounds pretty gourmet to me. A higher end scale of burger range. When the waitress brought it out, the presentation was fantastic – however I thought the grilled lobster looked a little overcooked. When Pandabear cut into his burger – it was too large to eat by holding it in your hands. He tasted the burger and said the burger patty is yummy but the lobster was dry and overcooked. So he was alittle disappointed with his surf and turf.

I went for the American Classic Black Angus beef, American cheese, crispy bacon, tomato, onion on a sesame bun served with skinny fries. I always believe you can never go wrong with a classic dish. When it arrived I saw a large piece of gherkins on a red onion. How interesting, and the presentation looks great. The crispy bacon lying on to of the cheese and the bun. I know its enough to cause a heart attack but the taste was well worth it. Apparently, I was told you can have unlimited gherkins and onions all you need to do is ask the waitress. There are also a tub of mustard & ketchup (in Aussie land we call them tomato sauces) sitting on your table for you to use as much as you like. I was pretty stoked with my classic burger, the Pattie was well cooked and it went so well with the rest of crispy bacon, cheese, gherkins and onions. I even manged to to put them together and eat them like a burger – it requires great skill.

The view was fantastic, while we were waiting for our meals to arrive – I was staring outside looking at different people standing, sitting, talking, bike riding around the union square area. It was rather entertaining and waiting for our meals didn’t seem too long. The food serving size was generous and delicious.

The waiter occasionally came to our table to check on us in terms of how was our meal going and whether we need more drinks. So that was rather good. Now it came to pay time, we couldn’t locate anyone around – so we walked towards the cashier place waited for a few minutes, thought to ourselves where are the waiters/waitresses – people could have easily sneaked off without paying. So feeling a bit impatient and we saw a waitress walking towards us, she didn’t apologise for making us wait to pay??? That sort of dropped down the standard of customer service & dining experience.

Restaurant Review – Fish Monger Seafood Restaurant

Published March 10, 2010 by Mary Jane

Well, last night was my younger sister’s early birthday celebration. So I decided to book a seafood restaurant, one that we’ve never been. I’ve always walked across this restaurant down James Street Northbridge and I love the fishy’s face – so I thought well, why not give it a try. Went online to read some reviews, not many reviews but the menu seemed nice enough.

It was a Tuesday night, so I don’t expect too many customers on a week night. There were a table of 2 and then a group of 6 came later on. Our table was set and there were some colouring pencils along with colour sheet for the kids to draw – that’s very thoughtful I thought. There were 2 waitresses on that night and they both seemed very friendly one have a strong accent not from Australia. Then there was also a sheet of fish jokes which I found quite entertaining.

I like the decor of the restaurant very casual and family orientated there’s even a fish aquarium that’s rather pretty full of different colour fishes…

There were lots of choice on the menu. My younger sister was starving so I decided to order some bread for the table, the waitress recommended sour dough with balsamic vinegar olive oil dip and I felt like some chilli mussels. So soon enough we had that, the sour dough was dry not fresh and not warm enough and the chilli mussels didn’t taste that great either, the sauce was runny not very flavoursome and the mussels didn’t seem fresh – I think I make better chilli mussels than the one we had. 😦 So entree was disappointing.

Chilli Mussels

So I was hoping that the mains would make up for the disappointing entree. So Mum and I decided to have the expensive seafood platter – $44 each and Pandabear had the seafood chowder with crumbed calamari both entree size, my younger sister had salmon with asparagus & her boy friend had seafood risotto. My older sister had sizzling garlic prawns and her hubby had steak with mash potato. When the mains started to arrive, we were really excited. The portion was quite decent and presentation was great. However the taste was disappointing.

Let me just tell you in detail:

Seafood platter – was beautifully presented could feed 2 people with the serving. The waitress recommended the lobster for additional – well I thought it was $6.50 it turned out they charge us $25 not sure whether it was her accent or not. Lobster was dry and the meat was not fresh, chilli mussels again – same stuff. The fish and chips – fish was dry over done, chips was ok. There were 4 tiger prawns – at least they taste ok. Salad was ok, dressing too sour.

Seafood chowder – too creamy and not enough seafood taste – tasted like boiling cream soup 😦
Calamari – was pretty nicely done
Steak & mash – according to my brother in law it was pretty good – at least they got the steak right
Sizzling prawns – according to my older sister it was pretty good
Seafood risotto – over cooked, it was dry in texture rather than creamy consistency. Some bits were not cooked so it was a bit hard. Seafood was over cooked
Salmon steak with Asparagus – salmon was nicely done so the dish seemed ok

Restaurant Review – Marriott Surfers Paradise

Published February 18, 2010 by Mary Jane

Hello again, okies we are still in the mind set of Gold Coast – at night time we decided to try out the restaurant in the hotel we stayed in Marriott Surfers Paradise. Now, usually I wouldn’t go to the restaurant in the hotel you are staying in chances are they won’t taste as good and it’s rather pricey. But since, Marriott Surfers Paradise is a 5 star hotel, the restaurant food shouldn’t be too shabby. 🙂 So we booked ourselves in and rocked up, they have buffet on special – everything that ranges from bread selection, salad bar, seafood section and dessert section. Looks rather impressive! I was really impressed they had a gigantic wood fire kiln for woodfire pizzas and there’s chef there making fresh baked woodfire pizzas. However we didn’t feel like buffet so we opt to go for the entrees and mains on the menus.

So, on the menu we decided to have woodfire pizza to share and Pandabear ordered some prawn kebabs that came with an egg and rice. I had the prawn linguine and the presentation of the food was awesome, very colourful the produce was very fresh. For the pizza we were able to choose 2 different toppings – 1/2 supreme and 1/2 meat lovers. Honestly we were so full and there was still 1/2 of a pizza left. Now, another weakness of mine – I never waste food – I was brought up to finish every single food item on my plate. So I’ve decided to ask the waiter whether we can take away the pizza. Pandabear was like ‘no it’s embarrassing I don’t think 5 star hotel restaurants do take aways!!’ – I wasn’t going to give up this easily, no harm asking. So I asked the waiter and he said ‘not a problem’ – so I was very glad 🙂 no wastage!! We could even have pizza for our supper – even though it’s cold.

Anyways, the food was lovely – great taste and huge servings. Now in terms of dining experience I must admit the food waiting time was a little long – around 40 minutes we were starving and it took ages for us to get the waiter’s attention they seemed to be floating around everywhere except coming to our table to take orders. That’s the same for me to wave to the waiters to take away left over pizzas. Here’s my rating:

Dining Experience: 3.5 star
Food Experience: 4 star
Would I recommend: I think so – for the price we paid and the service we get probably would go there 2nd time just to see whether the waiter performance picks up.

Anyways, we took some pizzas back to our hotels and was too full to have it for supper so I had to pop it into our little bar fridge cos there were lots of cheese. The next day, we decided to have it for brekkie – I know cold pizzas are yucky it became stale and hard. Guess what I did, I simply improvise and got my hair dryer and started blow drying the pizzas – sometimes I think I maybe an inventor when it comes to heating food hehehehe it took at least 5 minutes to heat up 1 small slice of pizza but it paid off cos Pandabear started eating his pizza and I did too 🙂 I love happy pizza endings. Anyways, I shall end it and hopefully I’ve changed the format of my blog slightly to accommodate bloggy friends – otherwise sorry I did try my best 🙂 good night and sweet dreams…

Food at Gold Coast – Movie World

Published February 17, 2010 by Mary Jane

Hello again…well, since we’re still on the topic of Gold Coast – the next theme park we went was Movie World. Now I was determined to go on some Adult rides and pulled Pandabear with me and forced him to ride the pirate boat with me that swings from side to side – high speed and he was screaming the whole time, I was pretty embarrassed and thought no more Adult ride for you Pandabear. So I came across this awesome water raft that zooms down a waterfall, except most of the time you get wet from the splashing of water. So I bought myself a poncho to make sure I don’t get wet, but it didn’t help cos I still got wet 🙂 but it was pretty fun. Then we went for Shrek in 4D that was awesome the cartoon was great and the whole experience was really cool cos literally when the donkey runs you can literally feel the chair moving as if though you are really riding the donkey and when the donkey spits there were some little drizzle of wet water that makes it really real. I would highly recommend going to Shrek 4D if you are in Movie world. While we were queuing up for the show, I came across this shop that sold the Gingerbread man in Shrek and it was all stuck to the door so I bought myself one 🙂

Our next stop was off to Looney gardens – kind of suitable for kiddies like Pandabear, it has kids friendly rides..then it was lunch time and we stopped over this tiny restaurant cafe that sells it’s famous round bread with fillings inside – we decided to go with the healthier option Caesar Salad and when it came it looked great, but it was so dry that we found the meal wasn’t that great, fortunately it came with the wedges so it made up for it. Next time we would have ordered the curry one more saucy 🙂 Then it was time for some daring Adult ride, I signed myself for this batswing ride which literally zoom up few 100 stories and slowly topple down. I was so nervous the whole time I was queuing and finally when it was my turn they buckled me up and the guy who sat next to me said ‘wow this is pretty scary’ and I said ‘Yup it sure is cos I’m afraid of heights’ and he answered ‘oh dear, should you be on this ride?’ I said ‘too late now’ and the batswing ride zoomed off and it was so scary but eventually when I arrived at the top it hovered quite a bit and I was able to see the entire theme park’s awesome view plus the beach view – what a great experience – I totally forgot about the fear of height. After the ride I felt very proud of myself for such a height accomplishment!

Then we went for a police stunt show – which was hilarious and very entertaining. We also went for some bumper car ride – Pandabear was ok with this one and I was feeling rather daring and brave and decided to hop on the scooby doo dog haunted house ride – now it was a undercover roller coaster ride which was pretty scary cos it’s so dark you don’t know when it’s going to speed up and speed down. But I really enjoyed it 🙂 Later on, we got home and decided for dinner we shall dine at our hotel restaurant it’s a 5 star so the restaurant should be a 5 star too. I shall do a restaurant review too and on top of it while we were in movie world we got a free $100 food voucher in a cafe restaurant but there was a catch – Accor vacation club which we spent $$$ to join, but it was well worth it 🙂

Food at Gold Coast – Sea World

Published February 16, 2010 by Mary Jane

Hello Bloggy Friends, okies – I’m now finally over Sydney so it’s time to swing by to Gold Coast, we managed to stay there a few days for our honeymoon as well and visited a few of highly recommended places – Movie world, Sea world and Nope – NO dream world for us cos we found out Dream world was all about scary rides and since Pandabear wasn’t a scary ride person and I’m kinda afraid of heights – another of my weakness we decided to just roam around Movie world & Sea world. Gold coast is a pretty touristy place compared to Sydney and Melbourne. There’s heaps of beaches and everyone seemed really lay back and friendly. Fortunately to get us by we hired a smart rental car – a tiny little car that fits just the both of us, I got it for free with my bartercard from my previous company. 🙂 I love freebies…it’s cool but hard to drive cos it’s kinda like tectonic which is similar to driving manual cars – yes I only drive automatic cars. Fortunately, Pandabear could operate it.

With regards to food, as I’ve mentioned I’m a major fan of Japanese food – in particular sushi and we found out there were heaps of Japanese food joint at Gold Coast yay!!! So we went off to visit the arcade similiar to Perth’s Garden City shopping centre except slightly bigger and try out their food court stuff. We chose to dine at this Japanese place and got some take away. It was pretty nice. I had the bento box and Pandabear had his usual tempura mix with rice. That was our lunch and for dinner, we decided to try out some fine dining Japanese teppanyaki restaurant and it was really cool with the chef performing some tricks with volcanos made from onion rings and chucking & chopping food and throwing it into peoples mouth with their tools – it was awesome. I will do a restaurant review later on 🙂

Apart from awesome Japanese food in Gold Coast we also had some room service in our 5 star hotel – the Merritt Surfer’s paradise where in the middle of the night I was feeling really hungry and decided to order some room service even though the menu price was a bit of a rip off but hey? It’s our honeymoon, so I ordered some minestrone soup that came with bread rolls. When the door bell rang, I had to quickly crawl back into my bed covering myself with bedsheets cos I was in my PJs and asked Pandabear to go and grab the food…That was yummy and the guy delivered to us and came back to claim the dirty dishes later on 🙂

The next day, we wanted to try out some sushi train. Now usually in Perth I go to Jaws for sushi train but it’s nothing spectacular just normal sushis but sushi train in Gold Coast is HUGE!!! So many varieties of sushis to try I’m pretty sure I had about 50 plates or something ridiculous seriously sometimes I wonder whether I have worms inside my tummy cos I eat so much…but it was awesome to have so many choices to choose from. They were all very tasty too 🙂 So later on we went to Sea World the moment I arrived at the place the trolley worth of soft toys caught my eyes – there were polar bears and seals plush toys selling for $10 each – I wanted to buy at least 3 of them, 2 for me and 1 for my niece. But Pandabear was whinging with his usual line “The soft toys are going to collect dust and you have so many of them!” I’ve since master the skills of obtaining soft toys..now the technique of getting Pandabear to get me some soft toy is to hug them first and then put them back, slowly walk away looking miserable and occasionally turn around to have a look at them again and then make a ‘sigh’ noise. And then guess what happens Pandabear would look at me and say his one liner ” go and quickly buy those before I change my mind” and I would race down to the trolley to grab 3 of them and be over the moon. Sweet sweet Soft toy victory 🙂

Now after the racing down to the soft toy trolley it was time for some snacks – we located this Hot Dog Works stand that sells huge hot dogs that came with lots of onions and cheese and a selection of mustard and tomato sauce. It was very tasty large enough to feed both Pandabear and myself. Later on it was lunch time and we decided to have some fish and chips and deep fried drum sticks – yes very unhealthy and they tasted pretty average really. It was great fun at sea world you get to see a lot of sea animals – I love animals so to me sea world is a great place to be!! I saw polar bears real ones and fake ones and dugongs. Visited the shark bay and saw some scary sharks – I don’t really like sharks. Touched some star fish – live ones and watched dolphin shows that was lovely. Had some kid’s rides – yes they are designed for kids and since Pandabear and I are both kinda afraid of adult rides – we go for the kids ones…I just passed being a kid. People do stare at Pandabear when he comes along with me. Snack time was some churros – only $3 each – bargain! They tasted like donut sticks with lots of cinnamon sugar. So we quickly bought some churros and lined up for some stunt police shows – it was really entertaining I would recommend people watching these shows when you go to sea world. Plus it’s free 🙂

I had great fun in Sea World and would highly recommend this place to anyone who loves theme parks and animals 🙂

Okies, I shall update you guys with more details on Movie world in the next post and amongst other food adventures…
